Project's Development: Restoration of traditional dovecotes
A significant number of Lesser Kestrel nests existing at the BSPZ are sited on the roof of the typical dovecotes traditional of this area. Tendency towards adandonment of these buildings during the last years gave rise to the idea of establishing financial aid destined to restore these peculiar constructions. It was intended to facilitate the breeding of this species by means of nesting boxes installation and also to promote pigeon breeding as well as preservation of this natural space characteristic arquitecture.
At the end of the application term, 82 requests were turned in. This high number of applications obliged to carry out a selection through which dovecotes that had been used as breeding sites during the last years had priority, as well as other exploitations next to these that proved its owner's special efforts in order to preserve it.
By the end of year 2001 a total of 24 dovecotes will have been restored.
